Audio Files Do Not Play in MediaShout

Sometimes user experience an issue where Windows Media Audio (WMA), Windows Media Video (WMV), or iTunes files don't play in MediaShout, but do in Windows Media Player or iTunes.  These files most likely have DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection enabled, and can't be played in MediaShout. MediaShout doesn't support Microsoft Windows DRM technology.  Similarly, the iTunes songs that are downloaded from the iTunes Store are copy protected by default and don't work in MediaShout.

Similarly, audio files copied (ripped) from a CD-ROM in Windows Media Player are by default ripped with DRM enabled. This setting needs to be disabled, and the audio re-ripped.  We generally recommend users rip audio CD's to MP3 format. Two programs that can do this are MusicMatch or Apple's iTunes music player.

If the audio/video files were purchased or downloaded from an online store (MusicMatch, Napster 2, Walmart, iTunes), they need to be burned to a CD-ROM and ripped into a format that allows MediaShout to play them back.  If you have iTunes you can burn a cd of the songs and re-import the cd back into iTunes to convert them to a format that will work in MediaShout.  Here is what you need to do to make sure iTunes will import as the right audio codec for a format playable in MediaShout:

  1. In iTunes and go to Edit > Preferences.
  2. Select Advanced > Importing.
  3. Look for Import Using and select AIFF, MP3, or WAV Encoder.
  4. Select Ok to save the setting.

This will cause iTunes to import songs as one of those audio codec types.  You can also convert a song already in the iTunes library by right clicking on the song and choosing Convert Selection To [file type].
