Transparent backgrounds

When using transparent backgrounds for a cue it projects/outputs as a black background; there is no difference between black and transparent. This has been fine for only using the FOH screens. However, I am using it to overlay lyrics into OBS (NDI visuals to the second PC for streaming) and I key out the black background. I am trying to simplify the process where I do not need to constantly need to switch scenes when transitioning from live video to pre-recorded (played from Mediashout); keying out the black of videos not a good option.

TL-DR, why is the transparent background setting not transparent?

Hey Lisa!

Sorry, I'm not sure that I follow 100%. What transparent background setting are you referring to? And, what type of transparent background are you trying to use?

In our article, www.mediashout.com/obs we do suggest using OBS to key out the black background.

Let me know what you're working with and trying to do and I can reach out and see if that's possible.

hey Ryan,

Do you have a similar KB/explanation for Vmix? That is what we use, and we are hoping not to have to move away from Mediashout. Thanks!

I do key out blacks in obs for lyrics and that works fine. However, If I am trying to a full/partial overlay of mediashout over the pastor speaking and I have to create a separate scene in OBS with/without keys.

MS has a "Black" background and a "None" background option. The "none" background show up black in overlays. I misunderstanding as "None" as transparent.

Hey Eric,

No, we don't unfortunately. David was a bit familiar with OBS and was comfortable writing steps for that but not anything else. You should be able to take most of the stuff in the article www.mediashout.com/obs and utilize it in vmix also.

Hey Lisa,

Ah, I see what you mean. Yeah, there isn't a transparent background option in MediaShout 7, unfortunately. There will always be a Black background behind anything you add in. I apologize for that.

I will pass this along to the team as an idea that we can possibly add in the future, however.

God Bless!

Previous versions of Media Shout had a way to implement a transparent background. When selecting a background color, you could pick any color or NONE. NONE made the background transparent. Now in Media Shout 6, this is no longer an option. I can't believe this was taken away. Seems to be an oversight. Why do software vendors seem to think taking away a feature is an upgrade. I now wish we hadn't upgraded.

Hey Lon!

To our knowledge, our programs haven't been able to get this feature in it quite yet. This does include earlier versions of MediaShout as well...

I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause, but as mentioned above OBS does provide a way to "key out" the background color to allow that transparency to happen. Most other streaming platforms allow this as well.

As Ryan mentioned as well, this is something we hope can be added at some point, but in the meantime, "keying it out" should work for most users.

I hope this helps!

One of the problems we have found with keying out any colour, even using a green screen, is that that colour gets eliminated if it is on the rest of the image as well (ie. if the pastor is wearing a black tie). This is basically the same issue as the Alpha Channel issue I raised in another post.

Ah, I see. I'm sorry you're running into this! Is there any support with the streaming hardware you're using to potentially work around these issues?

Yes the answer is Alpha Channel, support for which MediaShout supposedly provides .... It is becoming increasingly frustrating when what appears to be some simple functionality is expected and/or promised is never delivered. I have been asked on numerous occasions to switch out of MediaShout - my response has been that MS7 was promising all this functionality with add ons etc. and therefore will meet our needs. Needless to say this has been an endless journey of "sorry about that" or "we will have that fix out shortly". I hate to rant but some of the issues that continue to plague MS and the lack of response to current trends (not 2 months .... over a year) don't seem to have any priority. Meanwhile, we are bombarded with ads for 3rd party partner products, etc. I understand MS has outsourced its own product development. Someone needs to take control over this as it is not sustainable for your loyal customers. We need answers and delivered changes, not excuses! And please do not respond again with "I am sorry you feel that way, we expect something soon".

Hey Esther,

I checked with our team and we are unaware of any Alpha Channel support. We have removed this from our website to avoid any future confusion. I apologize for this!
